Q&A: meet Pink Zinc, the energetic duo giving us the sounds of summer

Lead Press Shot.jpg

North Coast mates Rory and Bede have come together to create new electro-dance collective Pink Zinc. These lads have woke me from my Covid-winter slumber and transported me to a European summer with their most recent track Weapon ft. Boi. This song is an instant mood lift that slaps your seasonal depression in the face, hands you a shot of tequila and says quit your job it’s time to party.

Pink Zinc have kindly gifted our ears with two tracks that both breathe life into a world that this year has forgotten how to party. The energy from Rory and Bede is exuberant and their music is clearly an extension of their personality.

The thing I love about these guys is they can easily laugh at themselves. They were doing 3 hours of vocals to only realise the mic was facing the wrong way. Funnily enough once they realised and switched it the right way round, it weirdly sounded better. Funny that.

We caught up with NSW boys Pink Zinc to chat about their new track, secreting glitter and how Bede’s Nonna got him into music.

Check out our chat below:

How did you guys get into music?

I can’t speak for Rory but for me, it was when I saw my old Nonna playing spoons at Christmas when I was probably 4. That old lady was just slapping her knee with those spoons and the clanging sound sent shivers down my spine and I vowed then to make music that sounded better than a spoons solo.

When did you come together and form Pink Zinc?

We met at a McDonalds drive-thru. Both in our cars in one of those double-laners. We both ended up in the waiting bay because we were ordering fillet-of-fish and supposedly that’s one of the rarer orders these days. Bring back the fillet!

Tell us a bit about Air Con and how it came to be?

Air Con was written immediately after we drove from Crescent Head to Sydney on a 38 degree day in a car with no air-con. Was hoping to fix the car's air-con all Summer but it's like $200 to re-gas it and i had just bought $180 worth of Tash Sultana merch so fk dat.

What’s your 3 favourite pink coloured things?

Flamingo, panther, zinc.

If you could play anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

Tomorrowland, Burning Man, Splendour, Berghain, Mums living room in no particular order!

What’s something you’re irrationally afraid of?

Those injuries where u break your bone through the skin…..fk dat noise man we are not about that life NO NO NON NO OH GOD IT'S SO HARD TO WATCH ERGH!

Would you rather sweat melted cheese or sneeze glitter?

Sneeze glitter everyday. I wanna fart glitter, I wanna bleed glitter, I wanna spew glitter.

How would you describe each other in only 3 words?

Rory: Easy, Breezy, Beautiful

Bede: Beets, Bears, BattlestarGallactica

Can we expect anymore bangin’ music from you this year?

We hope so! Thanks for asking…..yes, let’s say yes!!!

Farting glitter would be amazing, you’d leave the toilet so pretty after you finish, it would be like a little gift for the next person. Pink Zinc may be new to scene but damn, they’re good. Releasing two fire tracks in quick succession but we’re greedy bitches who already want more.
