Q&A: meet Anieszka, creating music that fuels the soul
Local Sydney talent Anieszka has blessed our ears with a transcending track titled Energy. This song was instant drag and drop into our playlist rotation, and as the title suggests this beat is uplifting but in an almost gentle way that recharges your charcras. Instant mood lift.
Anieszka paired up with UK artist Dat Gruvee to create this soothing track. The two met in London a couple of years ago when our home slice Anieszka was over for trip.
The Australian/Mauritian singer-songwriter fuses elements of different genres to create a sound that although familiar in beauty, is quite unique. Her music reflects her spirit, non confirmative and against current trends. As an artist she’s been put here to defy the norm and create something new by breaking down barriers with her soul/RnB/electronic sound. I mean, her spirit animal is a butterfly, she’s used to taking flight and finding her own path in life, need I say more!
We had a chat with Anieszka about her new release, the world of online dating and the importance of experimenting with music.
Heres a little look into our chat:
Tell us who Anieszka is and something no one knows about you.
I’m a simple soul, it really is the little things in life that make it all worthwhile for me. Music has been my best friend and confidante since I was a kid, and when I started to write my own music it felt like I was finally unlocking a piece of me that needed to be open and shared. I started back when I was 15, and it’s been a long but insightful journey since. My relationship with music has evolved and grown. Music knows every part of me and everything I’ve been through, there’s no hiding, and that kind of vulnerability is incredible.
Connection and making people feel something really makes me feel alive. I’m an ambivert and I feel music gives me the best of both worlds in that sense - in my alone time I can meditate, reconnect with myself and write. When I’m with people I can talk, laugh and of course sing. I always come from a place of gratitude and really appreciate having good people, good music, good food and good energy around me. Who am I? I think I’m still on a journey of self discovery but I’m so at peace with who I am today.
Something people don’t know about me... I don’t know how to whistle. I really wish I could! Can someone teach me please?
Your new song ‘Energy’ literally gives me life! What’s the story behind this soulful bop?
I’m so happy to hear that! Thank you! I wanted Energy to be a remedy, a tune people can get lost in and by the end of it, feel uplifted. I knew this song had to be about connection, but not in the usual sense. I wanted it to be personal, and encompass something I felt strongly about. The word ‘energy’ kept coming through, and once I started to place more attention on it I realised I use the word at least 2-3 times a day in conversation, on Instagram captions, in my writing and in messages. Once I knew the core of the song was about energy, the rest kind of revealed itself and created a story about connection that surpasses common traits. These ethereal but abstract harmonies also came through and altogether it just worked. Towards the end I felt like I had put together a huge jigsaw puzzle, everything fit perfectly and the end product was so satisfying and beautiful. Meshing this writing process with the infectious beat Dat Gruvee made was a dream. We have a solid soul connection so creating music together allows both of us to channel our best creative selves. I truly believe energy is everything, and now I have a song expressing that belief.
Do you think it’s important to experiment with music?
I think so, at least for myself. We’re always growing and learning, so I feel like music should reflect that. Music is expression, I personally feel like there’s no rules, just creativity. Write, produce and sing what you feel. Do different genres. Collaborate with different people. There’s so much to try out and absorb!
Have you dabbled in Tinder or Bumble, do you have any funny or notable stories?
I have (haha) I don’t love dating apps but I still end up on them. I once went on a Tinder date with someone who did not look like his pictures and took me to a very dingy pub. He then proceeded to talk about himself for 15 minutes straight and I knew I needed an exit strategy. I decided to try out the trick I’ve seen in the movies where people sneakily exit a date by going to the bathroom then leaving. I actually had to use the bathroom but once I came out the guy was standing outside waiting for me. I was horrified. At the time I just didn’t have it in me to tell him I wasn’t interested so I sat through his talking for another 15 minutes and said I needed to check my phone but he told me off for it. Ugh!
What’s your favourite item of clothing or accessory you own?
My gold hoop earrings, can’t live without them
What’s your spirit animal?
A butterfly! Though I do love tigers and elephants too.
What was the last app you downloaded and why?
SoundHound. If you hum the tune of a song into the app it’ll tell you what the song is. Highly recommend!
What’s something you’re looking forward to in 2021?
More new music, doing live shows, growing, learning, and connecting. I also miss hugs so I hope in 2021 we are able to have more of them (hoping that circumstances improve).
Anieszka we feel for you, that Tinder date gone wrong sounded painful! The waiting outside the bathroom kills me, stalker much?
We are super into her music and can’t wait to see where the rest of this year and 2021 takes her. We need more of you in our lives, please and thank you.
