Jet City Sports Club release empowering summer single ‘She Don’t Need No One’
Jet City Sports Club’s new release seems to accomplish the near-impossible. She Don’t Need No One is an airy girl-power summer anthem that sneaks in some oh-so subtle melancholic undertones in between those beachy riffs and lyrics about 40 degree Sydney days. The “she” in question never quite reveals if “not needing no one” is reassurance during a lonely post-breakup state or if she’s simply a single gal who’s now free as the summer breeze. The ability to allude to both these messages through their lyrics shows off the groups talent and mastery to convey emotion not just through the lyrics but through tone and music behind it. It’s a big fat yes from us!
Part of the group’s charm, other than their clear technical skills, is the fresh youthfulness that shines through their music. With youth often comes hope and joy, and all these qualities are apparent throughout Jet City Sports Club’s repertoire. Both the vocals and the tone throughout the song bear an uncanny resemblance to Snail Mail’s Lyndsey Jordan, with the DIY queen now headlining festivals globally. While JCSC has only just began their ride, things are looking awfully bright for these snazzy Sydneysiders.
‘She Don’t Need No One’s jangly, upbeat guitars dripping lightly with reverb, guide us through our narrator’s journey, backed by clean and energetic drums that aptly fade out only to crescendo when most opportune. What JCSC nails is timing. The track is dynamic, ranging from breezy vocals and strumming to a full harmonic chorus and back again. It’s the kind of song that makes you want to crack the windows and crank the volume, cruising down the coast letting your hair whip through the air, accompanied only by an empty passenger seat.
