Q&A: meet Sally, our glitter loving new best friend

sal-first-edit16.jpg

Wowza, our newest home slice Sally has recently dropped a throwback and a half in her new song Kids. The pop banger takes us back to a carefree teen drinking time when cruisers and UDL’s were ALL the rage. What I would give to be back in year 10 drinking double blacks with a straw.

Originally hailing from Sydney, Sally has since jumped across the lake and moved to Auckland, where she became a part-time hipster for a hot second. The Jetsetter has also found comfort and a sense of familiarity in Scandinavia where she met CLMD and Skinny Days. In Norway, they were tucked away in a funky little studio and just reworked the song until it was shiny, sparkly and full of glitter.

Sally is not just a musician she’s a damn lifestyle! From our brief catch-up with her we got bucket loads of energy and creative juices from her. She isn’t afraid to be bold and speak her mind and just be her, no qualms about it. In a time that’s changing the way we look at people it’s pretty cool to see someone just be their UDL loving, Mcdonald working authentic self.

We caught up with this absolute boss bitch to chat about her saucy future perfume line, her hit of a song and what it would be like to cry glitter.

Check out our chat below:

Sally!! So nice to meet you, for those who don’t know you so well, can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Sam! FTM! Thank you so much for chatting with me, so nice to meet you. I love what you're doing with the magazine. I'm a songwriter/artist and pop music girl from Aus/NZ. I spend a lot of time in Scandinavia, writing with heaps of cool people and pretending to be a classy Danish girl all while knowing full well I am a bogan from Chain Valley Bay South.

Tell me about your new single Kids, what does it mean to you?

Kids is such a fun song for me because I wrote it in a time when I was feeling quite nostalgic. I guess when we grow up a bit and get bills to pay and have to cook meals or think about dinner, every single day, its nice to remember those times you were drunk in a field or holding back a friends hair while she spews a river of bright blue vodka Cruisers and the only thing we had to worry about was what excuse we would use to call in sick to the job at Maccas...I hope that wasn't just me. But Kids is all about those times.

What was it like to work with CLMD?

CLMD is a super cool guy, so fast at working and so talented. It was so nice working with him. Especially because that was my first time in Oslo so everything was shiny and new. His studio is this amazing two story almost apartment sized place at the top of about a thousand stairs and It is wall to wall with incredible artwork, which I think makes it a really great space to completely zone in and cut off the rest of the world and just let the song become. You should check out Broslo an artist duo from Norway - They're amazing.

What made you move to Auckland from Sydney?

I was a reckless youth. I'd just finished a year at Ultimo Tafe in Sydney studying music and I was supposed to go back for a second year but I went to Christchurch to stay for the holidays and just ended up buying a vintage caravan, I think I accidentally became a hipster for a brief moment and ended up travelling the country busking and writing too much jazz music and drinking to much cheap sav. I had to quickly snap out of that cliche and start getting some work done after a while though. Could have ended very sadly lololol.

Would you rather cry or cough glitter?

Oh my god. I love crying so much, I think it's so important and the ugliest cry can be the most beautiful thing! As long as it's not too frequent (for me anyway). But I'd rather cough glitter, the visual of that reminds me of that Santigold album cover and I've always been inspired by that image.

What’s your go to hangover cure?

Berocca, fruit salad, a shower cry, fries, bacon, huffing lavendar oil.

If you had a perfume line, what would it be called and how would you describe the scent?

Oh wow that is so fun. I would want to call it Slutty Goddess and make it like inspired by a 2004 Supré slogan t shirt that says something like "If you think I'm a bitch you should meet my mom" But I fear people would take it too literally So i'd probably just call it ‘Sally, by Sally’ and it would just smell like what you imagine Kim from Kath and Kim smells like. Just for fun.

Do you have any more goals to tick off before the years end?

Yes, so much! I'm releasing some songs, Bad Mood is next, I'm so bloody excited about and an EP so thats my first focus. Also I have some cool sessions set up in Denmark and Norway that I'm really looking forward too. I'd freaking love to play some shows but unfortunately that might be a 2021 thing because of Corona. But I guess my main goal this year is staying healthy, grateful and safe and just continuing to meet cool people, make beautiful friendships and create some great songs

Sally by Sally I’m calling it now…. The youth of tomorrow will be drowning in that perfume. I want to put it on my bedside table, I can imagine the shape of the perfume bottle would be like a glass UDL can.
